MORFA BEACH clean up 13th and 14th March

The recent storms have thrown up an unprecedented amount of plastic waste onto the Morfa. This time a clean-up has been arranged for two mornings – Thursday  13th and Friday 14th March. As many volunteers as possible are required to help. Meet on the Morfa Beach by the railway crossing at 10.30 am.

Once again Keep Wales Tidy will be assisting us by providing plastic bags and tongs.  They are sensibly not risking their trucks in the mud again, so the Yacht Club will kindly provide a tractor and trailer to collect the bags and bring them back to the village foreshore. Keep Wales Tidy will then take the bags away for disposal.

Please help if you can. Wellies and gloves are recommended, and dogs should be kept on a lead so as not to disturb the cattle. For further details please contact Colin Butters on 267516.

Why do floods like this happen?

One of my favourite journalists,George Monbiot, a contributor to the Guardian newspaper and respected author has just posted a fascinating article on why agricultural policies in the UK are contributing to increased flood events close to rivers.  The Common Agriculture Policy as it relates to farm payments and the operating practices of water authorities all contribute to more water than necessary being discharged into rivers rather than being absorbed by the ground.
